D. Alexander Porter (b.1998) is a composer/performer currently based in Salt Lake City, Utah. His work, which often emphasizes texture and tone color, has been described as ethereal and thought provoking. His goal in composing is to create music which gives his listeners a space to be introspective and meditative. Much of Alex's musical output is inspired by places, and people's relationship to those places His early work, I Believe It Was Mercur, is an electronic work that was inspired by his time exploring ghost towns in northern Utah as a child. This focus on place also comes in the form of the frequent use of field recordings in his work, such as in his piece ..and the night smelled like snow, written for and premiered by the SPLICE Ensemble in 2022, which was inspired by and uses field recordings of downton Salt Lake City. Other works inspired by places include his latest work, ego death in sequim, which was written for the Soli Chamber Ensemble in 2024, and was inspired by the composer's time spentin Sequim, Washington; as wlas his solo electric guitar work, 2709222, which was inspired by the Olympic coast.

Alex's music has been premiered by several national and international contemporary music ensembles including Hypercube (2024, 2022), Soli Chamber Ensemble (2024), and SPLICE Ensemble (2023). Alex collaborated with the saxophonist Mokesaut Spotted Elk to create a piece for saxophone and electronics in 2022 titled B/ue Dream. He was selected to participate as a composition fellow in the 2024 Alba Music Festival in Alba, Iitaly. He was also chosen to participate in Hypercube's Cubelab composition workshop in 2022, and again in 2024. Alex is curently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition from the Univeristy of Utah, where he has studied with Dr. Devin Maxwel, Dr. Jessica Rudman, and Dr. Miguel Chuaqui. Alex's current project is a full-length album of ambient-americana music. Outside of music, Alex's interests include rock climbing, painting, and baking.
